«Gaspar freezes canteens, patrols and health inspections», writes Diário de Notícias, as part of a spending freeze imposed by Minister of Finance Vítor Gaspar following the Constitutional Court’s rejection of the state budget for 2013. According to the paper, the move is affecting all sectors of the state but also businesses that supply the public sector. The daily also reports that the main opposition Socialist Party has put forward several proposals which would cost the country €420m but would generate economic growth.

According to the paper, the officer was killed after the maritime police launch capsized during the rescue operation.

According to the daily, there has been a chorus of protests from all sectors including health, education and social security, with opposition parties joining in, claiming the measure will shut down the country.

«Ministry of Finance flooded with spending requests», writes Diário Económico, after Minister of Finance Vítor Gaspar ordered a freeze in public sector spending, following the Constitutional Court’s rejection of some of the measures in the 2013 state budget. According to the financial daily, the Directorate General for the Budget has been flooded with requests by the several ministries and state bodies seeking authorisation for expenses they deem essential.
